Why Riptide is my best Star Wars novel

Sharing is caring!

Well, at least I think it’s my best.  🙂

Why?  Because Crosscurrent was my first Star Wars novel and I was still feeling my way around a bit.  And with Deceived there were a couple mild creative crimps I had to navigate (I still think they’re both excellent novels, mind).

But with Riptide, I feel much more like my editors impliedly said:  “Okay, you’ve earned some trust from us.  Now take the gloves off altogether and let’s see what you can do.”

What resulted is what I regard as my most adventurous, interesting Star Wars novel.  And for me, that makes it the best.

I may feel the same way about my next Star Wars novel, but for now, Riptide wears the crown.  In my eyes, at least.

And if you read it, I sincerely hope you enjoy.  🙂

  1. I can’t wait to pick it up! Haven’t read Deceived yet, but Crosscurrent brought some much needed swashbucklery back to SW books, and was my favourite one since 2008.

  2. My copy is on the way. I can’t wait to crack it open. I’ve read quite a few Star Wars novels, and Crosscurrent was one of the better ones that I’ve read.

  3. Should I really, really read Crosscurrent before picking up Riptide or is Riptide ok to buy stand alone? For whatever reason I have more interest reading Riptide than Crosscurrent.

    • Nick,

I tried to drop enough references about the events of CC into Riptide, so I think you’ll be okay. I think the experience would be richer if you read CC first, but that’s just me.

  4. Plan on getting my copy today! I loved Crosscurrent. It was not one of my favorite Star Wars books of all time though. It was one of my favorite books of all time!

  5. I have read all the aforementioned novels and they all rock. What I’m a big fan of is the consistency of the continuity within the story-line. Crosscurrent has a HUGE connection to the Lost Tribe of the Sith, and Riptide hints at an equally huge connection to Fate of the Jedi….Is “Mother” Abeloth?

  6. I just bought and finished riptide. I have to say, excellent. curios, assuming we are going to see more follow on books from riptide, when do you think it could be announced, and when do you think it will realistically come out? Or are all those questions something that can’t be discussed.

    • SK,

As you suggested: I’m not allowed to discuss future books until Del Rey/Lucasfilm gives me the go ahead. Sorry. 🙂

  7. I finished Riptide a little while ago, and may I just say…WOW. You outdid yourself! I really enjoy books that boggle my mind, and you, sir, delivered just that. I look forward to reading more of your work!
