How did Cale become Cale?

Sharing is caring!

Well, many of you have purchased and read The Erevis Cale Trilogy Omnibus.  My sincere thanks for that.

When Phil Athans and I were discussing the two short stories we’d include as additional content in the Omnibus, we kicked around the idea of including Another Name for Dawn, which is Cale’s origin story, originally published in Dragon #277.  In the end, we decided not to go with the origin story (because it  felt out of sequence with the trilogy) and instead opted for All the Sinners Saints, and Soulbound, both of which fit better into the chronology of the Omnibus.

Since then, I’ve received lots of requests for Cale’s origin story, which is very hard to find (the e-version of Dragon 277, sold by Paizo, does not include the story for licensing reasons).  But no longer.  If you’re so inclined, you can download the pdf of Another Name for Dawn by clicking below.  I hope you enjoy (this is converted text that I cannot modify, so if  there are any formatting issues or the like, my apologies in advance).

  2. Thanks for posting this. I actually have that Dragon in a box in storage, you saved me the effort of digging through the boxes trying to find it! 🙂

  3. Thank you so very, very much. I’ve been desperate to read this for so long but all my attempts to track down a copy ended in abject failure.

You are damned good to your fans. Thanks again.

    Chris

  4. I agree with the fact that you are very good to your fans! Thanks for providing me some weekend reading, sir!

  5. I just finished reading this, and loved it. It’s EXTREMELY good. Maybe it can be included in the Twilight War Omnibus (hint hint). 😉

    Cheers!

    • Ben,

Thank you kindly. I’ve actually suggested to my editor at WotC that we collect “Another Name for Dawn,” the Cale story “Resurrection,” from the “Halls of Stormweather”, and “Shadow’s Witness” into a single trade-sized volume, kind of a “Cale’s beginnings” book. Hopefully that will come to pass.

  6. Paul…what date DR is Another Name for Dawn set?

Is it listed in the Dragon Issue?

    • SN,

I don’t recall off the top of my head. Once upon a time WotC had a timeline posted for the Cale series, including the date he left the Night Masks, but I’m not sure if it’s still on the internet somewhere.

If I find something, I’ll respond again.

  7. Thanks!

Also – was re-reading Dragon #273 that has the “Heroes of Stormweather” rogues gallery entry. It says that “editor Phil

  8. …Athans assembled the Sembia Seven…” and then lists you twice under that list of seven people. Guess you had a big impact on the team for that project!

  9. Thank you so much, Paul! I’ve been using this rich narrative for years, whenever I found a clever group of students, to teach literary devices. You’ve helped us enormously by sharing your work here. I had just one original and we could only track down copies abroad if we wanted to read it.
