Three Miscellaneous Things

First, if you’re in the U.S., I hope you had a wonderful Fourth.  We spent it with Jen’s side of the family in Lake Geneva, WI.  Boating, beer, good food, and good company.  It’s been a lot of fun.  The boys, in particular, have had a complete blast playing with their cousins.

We left Michigan for Lake Geneva on Saturday and the day we left a freak storm knocked out the power in Grosse Pointe.  … Read the rest

Paul turns his Twitter feed into MST3000 for Revenge of the Sith

Last night, on a Sam Adams fueled lark, I tweeted a running commentary as I watched Revenge of the Sith (a movie I really like). A few folks have asked me to collect the tweets and post. I didn’t quite make it all the way through the movie (cuz I’m old and sleepy).

Anyway, the collected Tweets are below. I hope they amuse (WARNING: Lots of expletives).

Paulskemp: I’m going to say it again (cuz … Read the rest

Malgus and Satele mix it up

You’ve probably already seen this, but if you haven’t, you really should — the most recent cinematic trailer for The Old Republic MMORPG has been released and it’s, well, awesome.

It features Satele Shan early in her career (she later becomes Grandmaster of the Jedi Order), Darth Malgus, and their respective Masters. Good stuff.

And if Malgus intrigues you, there’s this book about him, written by some guy who I hear is pretty cool … Read the rest

Erevis Cale turns eleven (and I wax rhapsodic)

tncaleHaving a baby on the way always causes me to turn nostalgic.  So here I go again. 🙂

Eleven years ago today I was nervously biting my fingernails, wondering if readers would enjoy Resurrection, the novella I wrote for The Halls of Stormweather

Resurrection featured a then-unknown assassin and spy named Erevis Cale.  My notes from that time describe Cale as a tall, bald, intimidating, deadly-serious man of action, trained by the Night … Read the rest

How I got started as a writer, in brief

GodbornI’m often asked how I got started as a writer.  The answer is not all that interesting, but here it is, in brief.

Like most writers, I was an imaginative kid who read a lot.  My favorite book back then was this illustrated children’s encyclopedia.  Most awesome.  Loved that book.  Of course, I also read A Wrinkle in Time and books of that kind, but fantasy fiction as fantasy fiction didn’t really hit me until … Read the rest

New cover for Ephemera and self-publishing plans

As you can see, Ephemera, my ebook short story collection, now has new and improved cover art (I don’t think the new art has filtered through to all ebook retailers just yet, but it is up on Amazon).  I really like it.  For those of you who’ve read Ephemera, the cover is inspired by the first story of the collection, The Signal.

I’ve decided to take self-publishing (or indie publishing, if you … Read the rest

Podcast interviews

Would you like to hear me blather on about writing, creating characters, Star Wars, Erevis Cale and Dungeons and Dragons?  Then I’ve got just the thing.

I’m interviewed by John and Patrick of SciFi Signal right here.  We talk anti-heroes, the purpose of writing, and lots of other things.

And here I’m interviewed by Jay and Chris of Jedi Journals on Forcecast.  We talk Deceived, Star Wars generally, creating characters, and many … Read the rest

Deceived a NY Times Bestseller

I’m pleased to announce that Deceived will debut at #13 on the April 10th NY Times Hardcover Fiction Bestseller List.  I want to thank all of you who purchased the book.  Word of mouth has really been fabulous and that means a lot to me.  So thank you!

And hey, if you haven’t picked it up yet, why not give it a go right…NOW.

And also, since I’ve gotten this question a lot from readers … Read the rest

Another Deceived review

I know, I know, another review of Deceived, and you’re sick of them. 🙂  But I wanted to post this one for a different reason than mere self-promotion.

You’ve heard often enough that a book, once it’s published, belongs to the readers, to love, hate, or feel indifferent about.   I subscribe to that view fully.  Still, when you write a story, you intend for readers to be struck in a certain way, to take … Read the rest
